Today, Amazon announced several new products, including the Echo Dot and the Echo Studio with Home Camera. Featuring Zigbee, Matter, and Thread support, a built-in eero Wifi Extender, and visual intelligence.
Echo Dot
The new Compact Echo Dot is powered by Amazon's AZ3 chip for advanced on-device processing “for faster, more natural conversations with Alexa+.” The Echo will also feature a fourth microphone so Alexa can better hear you in busy environments and improve voice ID recognition. The new Echo Dot will also feature “Omnisense, our custom sensor fusion platform”, letting Alexa understand and sense the environment around it for temperature and presence detection.
For example: “Alexa can make your home more responsive—turning up the thermostat when the room is too cold, or turning on the lights as you walk in.”
One thing that got my attention was the addition of an eero wi-fi extender that adds up to 1,00- square feet of coverage. It also has a smart home hub built in.
The Echo Dot is available starting today in four colors, Graphite, Glacier White, Agave Green, and Coral Pink for $99.99.
Echo Studio with Home Camera
Amazon’s new Echo Studio with Home Camera claims to deliver “A high-excursion woofer delivers deep, immersive bass and three optimally placed full-range drivers” with Dolby Atmos to “fill the room with immersive spatial audio.”
One thing that stands out compared to previous Echo Studios is the new Home Camera. The new built-in camera can be used with Alexa+ and the Alexa App. Alexa+ now gains visual intelligence and context using the built-in camera. You can hold up items and ask a question, and Alexa will use the image for context and provide a better and more accurate response. You can also use the Home Camera to check in when you’re away using the Alexa app. Amazon also says they are adding support to pair the Echo Studio with a compatible Fire TV device to “bring video calls to the big screen.”
Now there are some privacy risks involved, and Amazon has thought about that. They ensure user privacy by informing the user that the camera has a built-in LED that turns on. You will also be able to disable the Home Camera and use the device without it.
Echo Studio with Home Camera is $249.99 and available in Graphite. Echo Studio without Home Camera remains available for $219.99.
